Normally baby elephant have to stay with her mom because they need breast milk until the age of 3 years. But with Fha Mai, our youngest elephant in our family, the case is quite different. Fha Mai has no mom since she is one year old. Her mom died a natural death because of old age.
At Elephant Family Phuket, we need milk for Fah Mai. Good milk for elephant that can replace breast milk is milk from goats. Milk from goats is quite expensive if need to buy, about 30-40 liters per day. So we give traditional rice milk instead of goat milk. Rice milk is also good replacement instead of goat milk.
We boil rice- and powder milk together with little bit sugar and salt. We feed milk to Fha Mai 3 times a day, because we need to control her digestive system as she still young and not got enough nutrition before.
